Introduction
When the poet is saying about প্রয়োজন রক্তের পরিশোধন – The Cleansing of the Blood of the nation, it connects the word ‘Freedom’; so its obvious to understand, what does freedom truly mean?
Is a nation truly free when the sacrifices of its people have ended, yet corruption, injustice, and misrule continue to weigh heavily upon their lives? Is independence fulfilled merely by reclaiming a homeland, or must it also bring dignity, justice, compassion, and the freedom to live without fear and humiliation?
The Cleansing of the Blood” is a poem born from such questions.
It speaks in the voice of an ordinary citizen – someone who has witnessed sacrifice, endured hardship, and continues to hope for a homeland worthy of the lives given for it. The poem does not question the value of those sacrifices. Instead, it asks whether their true promise has yet been fulfilled.
Through images of blood, darkness, hunger, corruption, moral awakening, and an unfulfilled dream of a beautiful homeland, the poem becomes a reflection on the condition of society. It asks uncomfortable questions: Why must ordinary people continue to suffer? Why does corruption remain such a heavy burden? When will conscience awaken? And how long must human beings sacrifice for one another before the nation itself is transformed?
Yet beneath the anguish lies something important – a refusal to surrender hope.
The speaker still dreams of a beautiful homeland.
And perhaps that dream is precisely why the questions must continue to be asked.

না দিতে পারি যদি উপঢৌকন;
English Translation
The Cleansing of the Blood
Has our homeland regained
the dignity it truly deserves?
Has it found again
the message of compassion?
I still cannot see it.
Even after the sacrifice of thousands of lives,
why do I still feel, flowing through every vein,
the bitter sting of accusations
against corruption and misrule?
I am only one of the common people.
Even today, no lamp is lit in my home
if I cannot offer a gift in return;
even today, I see no sufficient measure
of restraint and self-discipline.
Why is there still a cry of anguish
at the very roots of life?
And why does life itself
still weep within me?
Why does the burden of corruption
remain so unbearably heavy –
heavier even than
the harsh struggle of survival?
When, then,
will our moral conscience awaken?
Must people live for one another,
must sacrifice the life
for the sake of life,
and will it take
the cleansing of our blood
to make that awakening possible?
In a heart that thirsts for beauty
lives the dream of a beautiful homeland –
yet again and again
that dream is thrown to the ground
beneath the grinding wheel
of an ailing reality.
Must the lives of helpless people
then end this way –
with nothing but disappointment
waiting for them
at every step?
How Long Must the Helpless Wait?
The poem ends with perhaps its most painful question:
“Must the lives of helpless people end this way?”
There is no easy answer.
The poet imagines ordinary people moving through life with disappointment waiting at every step. The word “helpless” makes the ending especially poignant because these are not people who can easily change the circumstances surrounding them.
They simply continue – endure – hope – struggle and they wait.
The final question therefore feels less like an accusation and more like a plea directed toward society’s conscience. How long can a nation ask its most vulnerable people to bear the greatest burdens? How long can corruption be treated as ordinary? And how long can moral compromise be accepted as the price of survival? And how long can a beautiful dream be crushed by an unhealthy reality?
Yet even in this final darkness, the poem’s hope remains alive.
The poet has not abandoned the idea of a beautiful homeland. Instead, she asks us to look honestly at the distance between what was sacrificed for and what ordinary people experience today.
The cleansing of the blood may not be a call for more bloodshed. It may be a metaphor for cleansing the values that flow through society – for removing corruption, greed, dishonesty, and indifference from the bloodstream of the nation.
And perhaps the greatest tribute to those who sacrificed their lives is not to sacrifice more lives.
A homeland becomes truly beautiful not when its people stop asking difficult questions… but when those questions finally lead to change.
